New Species of Phymaturus Endemic from the Sierra
de Fiambala, Argentina
We described a new viviparous species of lizard, from
sierras de Fiambalá in Catamarca, Argentina. Phymaturus fiambala sp. nov. The
new endemic species was found at an extremely high elevation, more than
4500 masl. This herbivorous species has unique characters within the
genus, including male coloration, squamation characteristics and body
proportion. Furthermore, the species presented significative genetic
distance with the most closely related species. Because of the new
cahracters found, a new phylogenetic hypothesis is presented in the
article.
