A New Frog Species Found Hidden in Plain Sight in Nicobar Islands

Researchers from India have described a new frog species from the Nicobar Islands. It is named Microhyla nakkavaram after an ancient Tamil term for the islands - meaning the land of naked people. Dubbed as hiding in plain sight, this new frog is surprisingly locally abundant in rainwater puddles across the islands. It is revealed to have been confused with a century-old species from Taiwan, Microhyla heymonsi, for which the study also provides a detailed redescription. The findings were just published in Zoological studies https://zoolstud.sinica.edu.tw/Journals/61/61-02.html.
