Integrative Taxonomy Detects Eight Species
of Neocaridina on the Main Islands of Japan
In the main islands of Japan, besides the native freshwater shrimp Neocaridina denticulata,
several other species of this genus are also present. The introduction
of alien freshwater shrimp species can alter the local fauna through
competitive exclusion and potential interbreeding. Accurate species
identification is crucial for understanding invasion ecology and
managing aquatic systems. This study presents the first comprehensive
survey using an integrative approach to confirm the existence of at
least eight Neocaridina species. Among them, four species are considered native, and four are assumed to be introduced.
