How Bioinformatics can Help Noticing Species Misidentification: a Case Study with Chordodes spp. (Phylum Nematomorpha)
It is now possible to utilize data available from open repositories for generating new insights, which can be helpful particularly for species with challenging taxonomy or hard to identify with morphological data. In this article, it is stressed how a previous paper regarding one of the most understudied animal phyla (horsehair worms, Phylum Nematomorpha) had species misidentification. Furthermore, it is also shown how potentially genomic tools can be used for extracting data and generating hypothesis regarding species identity and even ancient demographic events. In addition, the need for more genetic resources on horsehair worms is also stressed, particularly regarding the genus Chordodes.
