An Identification Key to the Snakes of Rio de Janeiro
The accurate identification of species is critical for understanding and organizing life on our planet, facilitating the communication of biological information. Despite their ecological and medical importance, identifying snakes is often difficult and misunderstood. This work provides an identification key for 97 snake species in Rio de Janeiro, as well as a photographic collection of the most challenging families for morphological identification: the Dipsadidae and Colubridae families. To address this endeavor, we've updated the state's species checklist and added new information on their geographical distributions. This study attempts to fill knowledge gaps on the ophidiofauna of the Neotropical region, specifically in the Atlantic Forest.
