Bark and Ambrosia Beetles in Apple Orchards of East Java
Bark and ambrosia beetles are recognized as serious pests of fruit trees globally, yet little is known about their presence in Indonesian apple orchards. This study explored beetle assemblages in East Java by deploying ethanol-baited traps across monoculture and polyculture orchards. A total of 353 specimens representing 16 species were collected, with Xylosandrus morigerus (Blanford, 1894) found as the most dominant, indicating its well-established status in apple systems. Polyculture orchards harboured higher species diversity and abundance compared to monocultures, while orchards located close to forest patches were more susceptible to invasions. These results stress the significance of regular monitoring and the development of preventive strategies to ensure sustainable pest management in apple cultivation in Indonesia.
