A New Genus of Freshwater Crab from the Upper Guinea forests of West Africa

A new genus of freshwater crab, Supraguinea, has been established to house four species from West Africa that were formerly included in the genus Liberonautes s. l. The change is supported by both morphological and molecular evidence that warrants placing these four species in their own distinct genus within the subfamily Liberonautinae, family Potamonautidae. Species of Supraguinea are found in Liberia, Cote d'Ivoire, and Guinea, and share several distinct morphological characters that distinguish them from species of Liberonautes s. s. The removal of these four species from Liberonautes s. s. leaves this revised genus with eight species. Identification keys are provided for the four species of Supraguinea, and for the six genera that are now included in the subfamily Liberonautinae.
