Scarabaeinae from Chiapas, Mexico
A biodiversity analysis of the Scarabaeinae dung beetles of Mexico's Chiapas state is presented. The checklist includes 134 species belonging to 24 genera. Fourteen of these species are endemic and are mainly restricted to montane forests. Onthophagus, Canthon and Phanaeus are the most speciose genera, which together account for 44.8% of the richness. However, these numbers are likely underestimated, and many species are waiting to be recorded or described for the state. In addition, knowledge gaps exist in several regions of the state that contain a wide variety of ecosystems. For these reasons, there is a clear need to further study this group of beetles in poorly explored regions to contribute to the knowledge of their true diversity, or at least to have a better approximation.
