Revealing the Implications of Foraging Area and Strategy on Greek Loggerhead Sea Turtles

We tracked 11 adult female and male loggerhead sea turtles from their breeding site in Kyparissia Bay, Greece. They migrated to both previously established and novel foraging sites, which exhibited varying amounts of fishing pressure. They ranged from having fully nomadic to restricted area foraging strategies during tracking. Turtle size generally decreased with the level of nomadism. We conclude that foraging strategy, more than foraging location, impacts body size and that foraging location is likely to influence survivorship in the population. This paper includes the first tracks of adult male turtles from this population and novel observations on the effect of foraging strategy on body size.
