Museum Collections and DNA Expose Invasion History of Yellow Grub Parasite in Taiwan
Museum fish collections and DNA barcoding have revealed the invasion history of the zoonotic yellow grub parasite (Clinostomum sinensis) in Taiwan. Researchers identified the earliest origin and location of parasite occurrence and detected three putative infection waves across the island. Molecular analyses further indicate a gentle population expansion following colonization. The study also shows that yellow grub infections are more prevalent in carnivorous fishes than in omnivorous or algal-feeding species. Alarmingly, the parasite is harming two regionally endangered fish species in restored and cultivated habitats. By combining historical specimens with modern molecular phylogenetic analysis, this research not only reconstructs the spread of C. sinensis in Taiwan, but also offers crucial insights for the conservation of vulnerable native fishes.
