Two New Mesobiotus Species (Tardigrada) from Uganda

The manuscript describes two new eutardigrade species from Kibale National Park in Uganda i.e., Mesobiotus ugandicus and Mesobiotus krystynae. Species were described using a combination of morphological analysis, including phase-contrast, scanning electron microscopy, and genetic data for four molecular markers COI, 18S rRNA, 28S rRNA and ITS-2. Mesobiotus ugandicus is distinguished by egg processes shaped like wide cones, while Mesobiotus krystynae has slender, filamented egg processes. Both species contribute to the growing knowledge of the African tardigrades, with these being the first new tardigrade species reported from Kibale National Park. The study underscores the importance of integrative taxonomy and highlights the genetic relationships within the Mesobiotus genus.
