Fish Parasites in a Disturbed Ecosystem
The Aral Sea is one of the most seriously disturbed ecosystems due to human causes. An often forgot element in managing ecosystems is the role of parasites, which can have a multitude of effects. When the parasite component is disturbed this also inflicts positively or negatively on the remaining fauna elements. We have followed fish parasites during the virtual human caused regression of the Aral Sea and the partial reconstitution of the Small Aral Sea. This revealed a host of interactive events, including some unexpected ones, that can act as guidelines for managing other disturbed ecosystems in terms of fish fauna and their parasites.
