Two Freshwater Crab New Species Discovered from the Same Hillstream in Southern China

Researchers have described two new species of freshwater crab from the same hillstream in Taishan, Guangdong, China. One belongs to the genus Cantopotamon, which is endemic to Guangdong as its name suggests. The other one, from the genus Megapleonum, is not only very rare but also only known from this single locality. Both species are small sized, inconspicuous and similar looking to the untrained eye, however, genetic studies have provided evidence that they are quite distant from one another and have morphologically converged due to sharing a similar habitat. The study highlights the rich and undiscovered diversity of freshwater crabs in the rapidly developing coastal regions of southern Guangdong.
